In a short three-match series like this, losing the first game brings you very quickly to the brink of a series loss and New Zealand would be aware of the repercussions of how one tiny error can ruin their chances. Australia would push themselves hard to finish off the series here itself, without thinking of the cushion of the third match.

Steven Smith would be a very confident man, coming into this game on the back of a match-winning, career-best score of 164. The tourists would hope that there are more Guptill like performances today.
