Despite his struggles against Kumara, Saha has managed to hang on and help Ashwin in building a steady partnership. Their stand has now crossed 50, taking India closer to the 500 mark.

Ashwin helps India forward:

While the seamers have done a good job, the spinners haven't been effective, which has allowed Ashwin to collect some easy runs and power India past 450.

Kumara strikes:

Finally, someone other than Pradeep has taken a wicket in this match. An outside edge by Rahane is snapped up by a diving Karunaratne at first slip.

100 up for Herath:

It's not often that you see Herath going in excess of 100 runs without a wicket. However, that's the case in this Test. Lahiru Kumara comes up with a fine delivery, drawing Rahane into the drive and having him edge the ball to Karunaratne at first slip. A wicket maiden leaves India at 432 for 5.

Fourth wicket for Pradeep:

A fine delivery from Pradeep brings about Pujara's downfall, ending a 137-run fourth-wicket stand. The batsman was lured into pushing at a delivery outside off and paid for it as he edged it to the keeper to depart for a fine 153. India are 423 for 4.

150 up for Pujara:

After a couple of tight overs, Rahane gets going with a cracking drive through the off-side off Pradeep. In his next over, the pacer errs in his line and Pujara flicks it fine on the leg-side for a four that helps him bring up his 150 - the 6th time he has scored 150 or more in his Test career out of his 12 three-figure scores. That's some conversion rate. Rahane gets to his fifty soon after, with a fine boundary off Herath.

Review lost:

Herath brought himself on for the third over of the game and appeared to have beaten Pujara's outside edge, which the umpire also thought. Build-up: India look to extend domination

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of Day 2 of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India at the Galle International Stadium. Here's a mini recap of what transpired on the opening day.

He wasn't even supposed to be in the Test squad in the first place. Shikhar Dhawan could only find a spot after Murali Vijay pulled out of the tour due to a wrist injury. Even then, Dhawan wasn't the first choice as the opener and found a place in the eleven only after KL Rahul was ruled out due to a fever. It appeared that the stars had aligned at the right time for the Delhi opener, who made sure to cash in, smashing a career-best 190 to set up a commanding start to India's campaign in the three Test series.

If Dhawan was the aggressor, Cheteshwar Pujara was the ideal foil, coming up with another inconspicuous yet effective knock as his appetite for runs continued. A record 253-run stand with Dhawan and an unbeaten 113-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane had one common factor - Pujara - who has set himself up for a big score.

Barring Nuwan Pradeep, who was the only wicket-taker on Day 1, none of the Sri Lankan bowlers even came close to taking one, although an erratic Lahiru Kumara would rue the dropped catch of Dhawan by Asela Gunaratne when the batsman was on 31, and during the process the fielder fractured his thumb and has been ruled out of the series.

After a day of records, more are set to be re-written as the Indian batsmen look to continue their dominance and pile on Sri Lanka's misery. The visitors will start Day 2 at 399 for 3, having recorded their highest ever Day 1 total in an overseas Test. While Abhinav Mukund and Virat Kohli will be disappointed at missing out on a wicket that is a belter, the run feast, nevertheless, will continue in all likelihood unless Sri Lanka can muster something special. The big-hitting Hardik Pandya, who has been handed his maiden Test cap, will be eager to make an impact with the bat, as will the likes of Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
