Australia captain Meg Lanning, who topped the run charts in both the editions of the Women's Big Bash League while playing for Melbourne Stars, decided to part ways with the club earlier this week before inking a fresh deal with the Perth Scorchers for WBBL|04 and WBBL|05. It was earlier confirmed that the veteran batter would miss this year's Ashes and WBBL following a shoulder surgery.

"The Perth Scorchers are a great Club with a strong core of experienced and up-and-coming players, so it's a really exciting opportunity for me to join the group," Lanning said. "They made the semi-final in WBBL|01, then the Scorchers' hosted the final last season, so they're definitely a team on the rise, with a bright future ahead."

Scorchers, who fielded a star-studded unit with a rich international line-up comprising Australian stars Elyse Villani and Nicole Bolton, England opening bowlers Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole, alongside New Zealand captain Suzie Bates, received a further boost after pocketing the services of their national skipper. Lanning is only the third player to be confirmed for the upcoming edition (though the injury will keep her on the sidelines), after Brisbane Heat signed up opener Beth Mooney for three years and Sophie Molineux decided to continue her stay at the Melbourne Renegades.

Earlier in the week, Stars had announced the star batter's decision to not renew her contract. "Whilst Meg's decision to the leave the club is very disappointing, we remain absolutely confident that the team we've formed is united and committed to the club's long term future success," Stars chief executive Clint Cooper had said. "We thank Meg for her contribution to the club over the past two seasons and wish her and her family well for the future."

Lanning has had issues with her shoulder throughout Australia's campaign at this year's World Cup in England, and upon seeing a specialist after their semifinal exit, it was decided that a surgery was needed. She is expected to be out of action for a period of six to eight months.
