Samson apologises, KCA may let him off with a warning

Sanju Samson has apologised to the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) and its president for his improper conduct during the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season. In an e-mail sent to KCA, Samson has accepted all charges levelled against him by the KCA and has pleaded the state cricket body to let him off without further disciplinary action as it was his first-time offence.

With Samson expressing deep regret over his conduct this season, indications are that the KCA may soften its stand and may just let the cricketer get away with a warning. Though KCA president TC Mathew confirmed to TOI that he had received a mail tendering apology from Samson, he wasn't willing to divulge further course of action. TOI had reported on December 1 that the KCA had constituted a four-member panel headed by TR Balakrishnan to probe multiple charges of misconduct against Sanju this season.

An explanation was sought from the cricketer on his unauthorised absence from the team after being dismissed cheaply in the Ranji Trophy game against Goa in Mumbai and his unruly behaviour in the dressing room. The four-member panel was also looking into the allegation that Sanju's father, Samson Viswanadh, had abused TC Mathew during a telephonic conversation he had with the KCA president. The enquiry committee had summoned the coach, captain and manager of the Kerala Ranji Trophy team to be present in Thiruvananthapuram on December 22 while Sanju was asked to appear before the panel the next day. Now with Samson tendering an apology, the committee may close the probe by issuing an official warning to Sanju.

Meanwhile, in another development on Monday Delhi Daredevils chose to retain Sanju for next IPL season.
