Voges diagnosed with concussion after being struck on helmet
Adam Voges, the Western Australia captain, has suffered a concussion and has been ruled out of the remainder of the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania after being struck on the helmet by a bouncer on Thursday (November 17).
The No. 4 batsman was batting on 16 when he was hit on the helmet while trying to avoid a short delivery from Cameron Stevenson. The 37-year-old lay on the ground for some time before he was helped off the field by the support staff.
This is the second time this year that Voges has been diagnosed with concussion after suffering an injury to his head. In a freak incident during the county fixture between Hampshire and Middlesex, he was struck by a throw from Ollie Rayner, a substitute fielder and was admitted to a hospital as a precautionary measure.
In the wake of the injury in May, Voges had backed the idea of allowing substitutes for players who may be suffering from concussion arising due to head injuries sustained on the field of play. Although he spent only a brief time in the hospital, the 37-year-old said he felt groggy for more than a week.
Voges, who failed in the first two Tests against South Africa, was a likely candidate to receive the axe for the third Test in Adelaide. While he was hoping to use the Sheffield Shield game to make a case with the selectors, the injury means that a comeback to the national set-up looks as good as over.
