Trott guides Warwickshire to Royal London glory

Jonathan Trott anchored Warwickshire's comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Surrey in the Royal London One-Day Cup finale to seal the title at Lord's on Saturday (September 17).

After the bowlers restricted Surrey to a lowly 136 in under 41 overs, Trott led the moderate chase with an unbeaten knock of 82 as Warwickshire romped home with more than 19 overs to spare.

Gareth Batty, the Surrey captain, had no hesitation in electing to bat first after winning the toss. Little did he know of the impending disaster.

Chris Wright got Warwickshire the first breakthrough as Jason Roy departed in the ninth over, after making 24. Steven Davies followed him back to the hut soon after as Surrey slipped to 50 for 2 at the end of 11 overs. Kumar Sangakkara and Rory Burns built a 49-run stand for the third wicket that brought them back in the game. But once the Sri Lankan was dismissed, on 21, Surrey's innings fell apart.

Rory Burns held one end together but struggled to build partnerships with as many as four of the last-seven batsmen bagging ducks. Chris Woakes, Ateeq Javid, Oliver Hannon-Dalby ad Jeetan Patel all bagged two wickets apiece to shoot out Surrey for a meagre total of 136 with the first ball of the 41st over.

With just 137 required to claim the title, Warwickshire seemed in no hurry. Trott kick started with a couple of boundaries off Jade Dernbach, while his partner Sam Hain took his time to get going. By the time Surrey managed a breakthrough, Warwickshire were marginally behind but well placed.

Along with his senior colleague and captain Ian Bell, Trott added 44 to the third-wicket stand but did bulk of the scoring himself. Stuart Meaker removed the Warwickshire skipper in the 23rd over but Trott stayed till the end.

Fittingly, it was Trott who hit the winning runs - second of the consecutive boundaries off Sam Curran - that helped his team close the chase with 19.4 overs still left in the bank.

Brief scores: Surrey 136 in 40.1 overs (Rory Burns 40, Jason Roy 24; Chris Woakes 2-24, Ateeq Javid 2-15) lost to Warwickshire 137/2 from 30.2 overs (Jonathan Trott 82*, Tim Ambrose 22*; Zafar Ansari 1-33) by 8 wickets.
