County Championship Division One Day 2 wrap Ryan 10 Doeschate century Leads Essex's Reply
Surrey vs Essex, Guildford
Ryan ten Doeschate's brilliant hundred ensured Essex reduced their deficit to only 32 runs by the time the stumps were drawn on Day 2 of their Division One game against Surrey at Guildford, on Saturday (June 10).
After Surrey were all out on the second morning, Essex were helped to a solid start with a half-century opening partnership between Alastair Cook and Nick Browne. However, neither of them got to their individual fifties. From 55 for no loss, Essex were reduced to 134 for 4, triggering panic in the camp before ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara rebuilt the innings with a fine 120-run stand for the fifth wicket. The English allrounder was trapped lbw by Stuart Meaker on 64 soon after the team went past the 250 mark. The skipper then struck small yet useful partnerships with the tail to first notch up his hundred and then take his team to 367 at stumps.
Earlier, Surrey resumed their first innings from the overnight score of 353 for 5 with opener Mark Stoneman unbeaten on 181 and Sam Curran resuming from 54. However, Neil Wagner got rid of both Curran soon after the play began and Stoneman just three short of what would have been a remarkable double ton - to keep Surrey to 399 in their first innings.
Brief scores: Surrey 399 (Mark Stoneman 197, Dominic Sibley 69, Sam Curran 65; James Porter 4-101, Neil Wagner 3-110) lead Essex 367/7 (Ryan ten Doeschate 120*, Ravi Bopara 64; Mark Footit 3-82, Gareth Batty 2-64) by 32 runs.
Somerset vs Yorkshire, Taunton
A much better batting display saw Yorkshire take a 105-run lead at stumps on Day 2 of the Division One county Championship game against Somerset at Taunton.
The day began with Somerset resuming their first innings from the overnight score of 41 for 3 but Steven Patterson struck early to reduce the home side to 48 for 4 as James Hildreth fell for 23. The other unbeaten batsman, Steven Davies, though put on a 65-run partnership with Lewis Gregory to take the team past 100. Soon after, Davies and Adam Hose fell in quick succession, and Ryan Sidebottom completed his five-for with the scalps of Gregory, who fell seven short of half-century, and Jamie Overton. If it weren't for the handy 44 not out by Craig Overton at the fag end of the innings, Somerset wouldn't have managed the slender 22-run lead.
Though Yorkshire's second innings suffered an early setback with Dominic Bees sending back Adam Lyth when the team had a mere 13-run lead, the 58-run partnership for the following wicket between Peter Handscomb (57 not out) and Alex Lees (38) ensured against yet another collapse.
Brief scores: Yorkshire 202 and 127/2 (Peterhandscomb 57*, Alex Lees 38; Dominic Bess 1-24) lead Somerset 224 (Craig Overton 44, Lewis Gregory 43; Ryan Sidebottom 5-56, Matthew Waite 2-41) by 105 runs.
Lancashire vs Middlesex, Southport
The second day of the Lancashire vs Middlesex encounter at Southport was washed out due to persistent rain.
Brief scores: Middlesex 180 (John Simpson 53, Paul Stirling 49; Jordan Clark 3-36, Saqib Mahmood 3-63) lead Lancashire 123/4 (Shivnarine Chanderpaul 32*, Steven Croft 31; Tim Murtagh 3-21) by 57 runs.
