Nawroz Mangal retires from international cricket
Nawroz Mangal, the former Afghanistan captain, announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect on Tuesday (January 3). The 32-year old will, however, continue to lead the selection committee of the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
Today I decided to announce my resignation from international cricket, I want to thank my friends and family who always supported me, Mangal said. We want Nawroz Mangal to continue (playing) domestic cricket as he has got a lot of fans in the country, Shukrullah Atif, the ACB chief, said.
Mangal has played 49 One-Day Internationals and 30 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring 1139 and 454 runs respectively in the two formats. He has also picked 12 wickets with his part-time offbreak. He has been an integral part of the Afghanistan team that has witnessed a drastic ascendancy in world cricket in the last six to seven years.
Under Mangal's captaincy, Afghanistan have won 12 out of the 22 ODIs played and six of the 13 T20Is. He was also the highest run-getter for Afghanistan in ODIs, till Mohammad Shahzad overtook his runs tally in December 2015.
Mangal last played for Afghanistan in the third ODI against Bangladesh in October last year, where he scored a 38-ball 33.
