Travis Head, the Australian batsman, is concentrating on cementing his position in Australia's One-Day International (ODI) team despite the allure of Test cricket beckoning.
The 22-year-old is part of Australia's squad for the upcoming Chappell-Hadlee series against New Zealand starting on December 4. After a tough start to the domestic season, Head returned to form by scoring a century in the Sheffield Shield for South Australia against Victoria at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
"I feel in good form, which is good," Head said on Wednesday (November 30). "I'm coming off a good game against Victoria. I've had starts in games and haven't been able to get the sort of not outs batting at six and finish games off, which I've been pretty disappointed about.
"But also just to win games for Australia, that's what I'm here to do and, if I get my opportunity this week, I feel in good form and, hopefully, if I can do that and then if that gets me picked further down the track, then great."
Head, who has played 12 ODIs since his debut in the Caribbean mid-year, is one of Australian cricket's hottest young batsmen and has been talked about as a candidate for the Test team. Australian selectors have undertaken a youth policy, as evidenced by three batting debutants playing in the third Test against South Africa recently.
Despite the Chappell-Hadlee series seemingly being an audition for his Test candidacy, Head said he was solely focused on establishing himself in Australia's ODI team. "There are opportunities but you've got to get runs as well and that's something I haven't done this season until this week," he said. "I've been getting starts but haven't been able to go on and get a big score. This week, I was able to do that and it's just about trying to capture whatever that was and keep the momentum going personally and win games for Australia."
Australia's No.1 ODI ranking is in jeopardy if they lose to New Zealand after being whitewashed in South Africa recently. Head said Australia was keen to retain their top-ranked status.
"We'll try and still play as the No.1 side. I think we've done that quite well over the last few years," he said. "Coming into the squad, I guess that's one thing that stands out - is how professional everyone is. So there's no doubt we'll be trying to hold onto that."
