The team's regular vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal was also not named in the initial squad due to a surgery on his thumb. That left only Herath as the senior most member in a squad that contained four new faces.

Mathews aggravated a calf injury during training on Sunday, according to reports. That opened the door for Herath to be skipper. The left-arm spinner has not led his country in any format but is all set to become the country's 13th Test captain, in Zimbabwe.
