Mortaza, Rahman fined; Buttler reprimanded for on-field incident
Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh captain, and Sabbir Rahman, middle-order batsman, have been fined 20% of their match fee after they were found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their sides' second One-Day International in Mirpur on Sunday (October 9).
England captain, Jos Buttler was let off with a less severe punishment, as he was handed an official reprimand.
The penalties comes after the three players were involved in an on field incident that unfurled soon after Buttler had been dismissed during England's chase of 239 in the second One-Day International. Buttler was batting well on 57 before he was trapped leg before by Taskin Ahmed. Some of the Bangladesh players turned towards Buttler in celebration, and the England captain reproached by walking up to the Bangladesh players.
Buttler was then stopped by the on-field umpires before he walked back to the dressing room.
The International Cricket Council noted that Mortaza and Sabbir overreacted after Bangladesh's LBW review against Buttler was successful with the England captain responding by making inappropriate comments.
In a statement released by the ICC, it said that "both the Bangladesh players were found to have breached Article 2.1.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match."
Buttler, meanwhile, was found guilty of "violating Article 2.1.4, which deals with "using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an international match".
Subsequently, in addition to the penalties imposed, one demerit point each has been added to the disciplinary records of the three players.
While this was the first offence for the rival captains, Sabbir has been sanctioned for the second time since the introduction of the revised code. He had also received two demerit points during in the series against Afghanistan on 26 September. He will be in line for a suspension if he collects another demerit point.
All three players admitted to their offences and accepted the penalties proposed by Match Referee, Javagal Srinath. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Sharfuddoula, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Anisur Rahman.
Commenting on his decision, Mr Srinath said: "The Bangladesh players overstepped in their celebration of Jos Buttler's wicket, which prompted an inappropriate reaction from the dismissed batsman and required the on-field umpires' intervention. We all want to see high intensity on the field of play, but only as long as it is not provoking or antagonising or disrespecting the opponent."
