Might have to play some ugly cricket Nathan Lyon

Nathan Lyon, the experienced Australian offspinner, is confident of Australia bouncing back when they take on South Africa at home in a three-Test series. Australia is currently coming off a string of disappointments having been whitewashed earlier in August by Sri Lanka 3-0 in a Test series and then being handed a similar fate against South Africa in a One-Day International series away from home.

However, when the first Test against South Africa begins on November 3, 2016, at the WACA in Perth, they will hope to leave the past behind and make a positive start to their home summer, where they will be hosting New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka too.

"Yes, South Africa are a great team - they've got some world-class superstars in there - but we need to go out and play well," Lyon told Fairfax Media on Sunday (October 16). "We just need to get out there and compete and get back to playing some good, strong, positive cricket," he added.

Australia's inability to tackle spin-friendly wickets was one of the key reasons of their felling in Sri Lanka. Lyon finished as the third-highest wicket-taker on the tour with 16 wickets, behind Rangana Herath (28) and Mitchell Starc (24). However, he believed that Australia have taken back a lot of lessons from the Sri Lankan experience that would equip them better for their four-Test series against India in February.

"We'll be better for that run in Sri Lanka, for all the experience," Lyon said. "A lot of players had never played in the subcontinent before so it's [now] an opportunity for us to get better.

"We might have to adjust a few things here and there and might have to play some ugly cricket and go away from the big expansive game of cricket," he said.
