Lodha-driven north-east units flex muscles now
The seven sisters from India's northeast are singing a cricketing song for the future right now. Thanks to the Lodha Committee recommendations, they have started believing their time has come.
The seven sister states of the north-east are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura in northeastern India. Of these, only Assam and Tripura are full members of the Board. These members have now tightened their fists as they see an opportunity like never before to be part of India's most elite club of who's who, which is the BCCI.
A senior state representative member of the BCCI, who was privy to the details of the eight-hour marathon SGM two days ago, said, "for the first time, the north-east representatives spoke tough. They were very clear in their understanding of the SC order." Sources say Sourav Ganguly, president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), has also been supportive of the northeast associations and they've in fact been in touch with the former India captain. However, two north-east associations denied any such support from Ganguly.
Interestingly, the Tripura Cricket Association agreed to implement the Lodha Committee recommendations in its entirety the same day when the BCCI conducted its SGM. Incidentally, it was the same day when the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) too did the same.
"For a long time, we were waiting to see what the BCCI will do. Almost a month. In the end, we decided to act and implement the recommendations. All our members unanimously decided it was the right thing to do," Tripura association president Kamal Saha told TOI.
