Austin Waugh ton hands New South Wales U-17
Austin Waugh, son of former Australian captain Steve Waugh, finished as the top run-getter in the Under-17 50-over National Championships for 2016-17. The icing on the cake was his unbeaten 122 in the final that helped New South Wales Metro beat Queensland at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Thursday (October 6).
That said, New South Wales had to work hard to for the win. They won a nerve-racking semifinal against Western Australia by one run and were struggling at 57 for 4 in the final before Waugh bailed them out along with Aiden Bariol. The duo was involved in a 199-run stand for the fifth wicket, with Bariol scoring 85 of them, while Waugh remained not out and ended with a 136-ball 122.
I knew if I stuck in there, the runs would come later on in the innings, especially with this quick outfield. It made it a bit harder early on, losing a few early wickets, so it was good to get a few runs," Waugh said after the match.
The 17-year-old amassed 372 runs at 74.4 in the tournament, but credited his bowlers, who defended 275 in the final. Iain Carlisle scalped 3 for 24, while spinners Tom Sowden and Ryan McElduff picked two wickets each to give New South Wales a 152-run victory.
I just had to work hard and get a decent total on the board, because our bowling has been pretty strong within the tournament. I knew we could defend a decent total," added Waugh.
Brief scores: NSW Metro 274/6 in 50 overs (Austin Waugh 122*, Aiden Bariol 85, Ward 3-58) beat Queensland 122 in 34.1 overs (Carroll 43, Iain Carlisle 3-24)
