Tymal Mills signs contract extension with Sussex

Tymal Mills, the left-arm fast bowler, has signed a one-year contract extension with Sussex, the club announced on Friday (September 23). The new deal will see the 24-year-old quick remain at the club until the end of the 2017 season.

Mills, whose participation is restricted to playing only T20 cricket due to a congenital back condition, had earlier put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the club after departing from Essex in 2015. His performances for the Sharks in the NatWest T20 Blast earned him his maiden England cap, against Sri Lanka at the Rose Bowl in July.

Capable of bowling at over 90mph, Mills has been a proven performer for Sussex in the shortest format. In 24 T20 Blast games for the Sharks, he has 34 wickets at an average of 19.23.

"The club has put a lot of time and effort into me, so I'm looking forward to repaying them by doing well in T20 next year. Hopefully we can build something special moving forward," Mills said. "Obviously, when I first signed, I was hoping to play in all three formats but that hasn't worked out, so I'm only playing T20 now and focusing on that. It was a really proud moment to receive my first England cap and it was nice that the work and performances that I have put in for Sussex were recognised."

Commending Mills for his innate ability to get the top players out, Sussex skipper Luke Wright said: "I'm delighted Millsy has signed a new contract. He is a big part of our T20 side. It is fantastic as captain to have such pace to turn to; he has a great ability to get the top players out. From a crowd point of view, it is exciting to watch such a fast bowler flying in down the hill at Hove.

"I look forward to watching the development of him both for Sussex and hopefully England this winter and next season."
