Australia's Kookaburras and Sharks knocked out of men's hockey and water polo

Kookaburras' campaign cooked

After entering the Rio Games as the world number one, the disappointing campaign of Australia's men's hockey team came to an end on Monday.

Athens 2004: Gold
Beijing 2008: Bronze
London 2012: Bronze

Group-stage losses to Spain and Belgium meant the Kookaburras finished third in their group, meeting The Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

The last-eight clash started badly, with Billy Bakker scoring in the opening minute and things did not get much better from there.

Bob de Voogd added another in the second quarter, Valentin Verga scored in the third, and Mink van der Weerden netted in the final term to send the Kookaburras packing.

It is the first time since a fourth-placed finish at the Seoul Games in 1988 that the Kookaburras have failed to pick up an Olympic medal.

Sharks win but are knocked out

The Sharks won their final group match, beating Greece 12-7 on Monday, but it was not enough to keep their campaign alive.

Australia led at every break, with John Cotterill and Rhys Howden netting three goals each, while Aaron younger finished with a double and Richie Campbell, Aidan Roach, Joel Swift and Joe Kayes also got on the board.

Unfortunately for the Sharks, Serbia's 12-8 win over Japan a few hours later helped it into fourth spot in group A, securing the final quarter-final spot.

Boomers maintain form heading into quarter-finals

Australia's men's basketball team, hunting a maiden Olympic medal, ensured its 98-88 loss to Team USA would be the only blip of the pool stage with an 81-56 victory over Venezuela.

The South Americans never looked in the match against the Boomers, who shot out to 16-2 lead in the first six minutes.

Chris Goulding hit 4/7 from three-point range en route to a game-high 22 points.

The Australians will now wait for the final pool B games to find out who they will play in the quarter-finals.
